The semester ticket is included in the semester fee and is therefore automatically paid with re-enrolment for the new semester. After intensive negotiations and political efforts, the Germany Ticket as a semester ticket was introduced at several German universities as early as the summer semester of 2024. At JLU, it has been available since the winter semester 2024/2025.

With it, you can conveniently travel throughout Germany using local public transport (buses, trams, subways, and regional trains). Long-distance trains (IC, ICE, EC) are not included, just as with the regular Germany Ticket.

The ticket is issued exclusively in digital form; a physical alternative is only available in justified exceptional cases. If you require such an alternative, please contact the AStA office by email. Note that students who receive the ticket in an alternative form must submit a new request each semester.

Since the winter semester 2024/2025, an online portal has been available via the link above. There, you can log in with your HRZ ID and immediately obtain a QR code. You can also save this code in a digital wallet on your mobile device for offline use, so a constant internet connection is not required.

Important usage notes

  • Screenshots or printed copies of the QR code are not accepted during ticket inspections.
  • The print on your student ID card is not a valid proof of the Germany Semester Ticket. Although it remains visible for a transition period, it is no longer valid as of the winter semester 2024/2025.

Validity periods

  • Winter semester: October 1 – March 31
  • Summer semester: April 1 – September 30

Price

The ticket is not free, but at €34.80 per month (a total of €208.80 at JLU for the winter semester 2025/2026) – that is 60% of the regular price (€58/month) – it remains a very affordable offer for students. The 40% reduction is made possible by the solidarity model: all students pay the same contribution, regardless of individual usage. This encourages the use of public transport for both study-related and private travel.

Thanks to its nationwide validity, the ticket is perfect for short trips and weekend excursions. However, please note that long-distance trains (IC, EC, ICE) are not included, and regional regulations for bicycle transport may vary depending on the transport association.

Price development and future outlook

Starting in the winter semester 2026/2027, the price of the Deutschlandticket semester ticket will increase to €226.80 per semester (calculated as €63 × 6 months × 0.6). A decision by the student parliament on whether the ticket will continue in this form or be replaced again by the Hessen Ticket is still pending and will be communicated in due course.
