Who we are
Student self-administration – What is that anyway?
Student government
That’s who you are! Every student at JLU is automatically a member of the student government.
The Student Parliament (StuPa)
33 members of parliament sit here and decide on your concerns. Which groups (“lists”) are represented with how many seats is decided at the annual StuPa elections.
The General Student Committee (AStA)
The AStA is the executive body of the constituted student body. The members (“Referent*innen”) work in different areas (“Referaten”).
The autonomous units
The autonomous units represent certain groups of people, such as foreign students or queer people, and take care of their special concerns. They are not elected by the StuPa, but by the respective general assemblies.
The student councils
A student council consists of all students of a department. In the Fachschaftsräte (FSR) voluntary students from the respective departments are organized. They represent the interests of the student body, help with questions and problems and organize events.
The Student Council Conference (FSK)
Representatives of all student councils come together here to decide on the concerns of the student councils.
What does the AStA do?
Offers of the AStA
For example, we at the AStA make sure that you can travel throughout Hesse at a fixed price with the semester ticket. So that you are not only dependent on the buses in Giessen, you can also cycle through Giessen on one of our rental bikes for 1 hour free of charge. In addition, we offer free legal and psychological counseling for students.
Discounts at local events
We cooperate with some local associations and initiatives. That’s why you can get discounted tickets for events of the Giessen 46ers, the FC Giessen and the annual “Stadt ohne Meer” festival. In addition, you can visit the Giessen City Theater for free with the theater ticket and go to the Giessen open-air pools whenever you want with the open-air pool flat rate for 2 € per semester.
The Units
The work of the AStA is done by the officers, who were elected through the lists. The departments take care of our finances, cooperation and employees or organize events in the areas of traffic, sustainability, anti-fascism and much more. Even the annual AStA parties are planned and organized by a department.
